Fans of Frank Lloyd Wright’s house Fallingwater have long been able to visit the architect’s modernist masterpiece as a museum, but soon they can enjoy the house almost as if they were living in it.

In the coming months, curators of the house built amid a waterfall in the leafy Laurel Highlands of western Pennsylvania will offer a new program, Insight Onsite at Fallingwater, where visitors will spend one full day and two evenings at the residence, enjoying the house as it was intended.

While regular visitors are whisked through the iconic house in guided tours lasting about one hour, those at the Insight Onsite program can lounge about reading, engage in interesting conversations on the terraces, have a cocktail by the fireplace, write a personal letter at a desk and enjoy a lively dinner party.

Regular visitors pay $18 admission but the more intimate experience comes with a more exclusive price tag — $1,195.

“It’s a different experience of the house when you are here by yourself than when you are with a group of people,” Fallingwater Director Lynda Waggoner said in her office, nestled at the back of the house.

“We’d like to be able to share that.”

Up to eight people will arrive in the evening and be given an in-depth tour and then sleep overnight, not in Fallingwater itself but in a newer four-bedroom home built on the grounds for the accountant of the family which owned the property.

The next morning visitors have the morning to lounge around the house and grounds, have lunch on the terraces, have more time alone to do as you wish and then have a dinner party at the house with curators and a guest, perhaps a leading figure in the architecture community.

Waggoner said the program would appeal to those with a passion for architecture.

“It’s a compete experience of nature and art. This is the tree house you always wanted to live it,” she said. “The goal here is to provide the best experience we can of the house without sleeping in the house.”

Curators unsuccessfully attempted to launch the program earlier this year as a mid-week program since the house is normally closed on Wednesdays.

But those who expressed an interest said they wanted to attend on the weekend rather than midweek. Now curators are finalizing weekend dates for the debut program, perhaps in December or in early March when the house is normally closed.

Fallingwater was built for Pittsburgh department store owner Edgar Kaufmann Sr., whose son briefly studied architecture under Wright.

More than 4 million people have visited the house, about 90 minutes from Pittsburgh, where leaders of the Group of 20 leading rich and developing countries were meeting at a summit on Thursday and Friday.

The house features an innovative cantilevered design, with terraces and floors extending over the waterfall, meaning that while the sound of water can be heard throughout the house, you have to go outside to actually see the waterfall.

Built in the 1930s at the height of the Great Depression, the house cost $155,000, or about $2.3 million when adjusted for inflation.

RankPay is attempting to change the face of Search Engine Optimization, actually they aren’t attempting but they are accomplishing fantastic things. I was introduced to RankPay several months ago from a graphics designer I work with on a frequent basis, she told me that RankPay helped her achieve top rankings within Google for a very competitive industry related keyword.

I’ve always been skeptical of SEO companies and services, they typically are nothing more than a headache and a wallet/ROI draining marketing medium. In the past I have been suckered out of thousands and thousands of dollars, and many guarantees that went without follow through. That is until I met RankPay and their SEO services.

RankPay has a unique SEO Opportunity tool which will help you identify keywords that are best suited for an SEO campaign. After playing around I was able to better identify 4 additional keywords that I never knew existed for my market. Already off to a good start I checked out the rest of their claims.

No upfront costs

Pay only when ranked

That’s an attention getter already, no upfront fees and pay only when I’m ranked? That’s nearly too good to be true. That’s basically guaranteed SEO, without any of the risk. After playing around with their toolbar, identifying 10 keywords, and reviewing pricing, which by the way blew my other companies pricing out of the water, I’ve never seen SEO for this good of a deal I submitted and waited to hear from them.

I was called within a few hours to talk about my campaign, discuss some of the keywords that I chose, and discuss some keywords that they identified. All in all, 3 of my keywords were WAY off and RankPay helped me find keywords that would not only bring in better traffic but help convert that traffic as well. I was very thankful that they got me on the right track, right away.

Fast forward two months, I now rank in the top 10 positions for over 6 keywords and the top 3 positions for 3 of them. I urge you to find a company, especially an SEO company, with less hassle and more results than RankPay. They have the model down pat, and I see them going very very far (if they aren’t huge already I’d be surprised). Keep up the fantastic service RankPay, you’ve got a customer for life. I’ve told everyone I know and will continue doing so.

EDIT: After completing this RankPay review, RankPay has given all Dailybuzzz.com readers an exclusive discount towards their services. RankPay promo code RP50 for $50 off RankPay’s SEO services.

Bright teenagers are a disappearing breed, an alarming new study has revealed.

The intellectual ability of the country’s cleverest youngsters has declined radically, almost certainly due to the rise of TV and computer games and over-testing in schools.

The ‘high-level thinking’ skills of 14-year-olds are now on a par with those of 12-year-olds in 1976.

The findings contradict national results which have shown a growth in top grades in SATs at 14, GCSEs and A-levels.

But Michael Shayer, the professor of applied psychology who led the study, believes that is the result of exam standards ‘edging down’.

His team of researchers at London’s King’s College tested 800 13 and 14-year-olds and compared the results with a similar exercise in 1976.

The tests were intended to measure understanding of abstract scientific concepts such as volume, density, quantity and weight, which set pupils up for success not only in maths and science but also in English and history.

One test asked pupils to study a pendulum swinging on a string and investigate the factors that cause it to change speed. A second involved weights on a beam.

In the pendulum test, average achievement was much the same as in 1976.

But the proportion of teenagers reaching top grades, demanding a ‘higher level of thinking’, slumped dramatically.

Just over one in ten were at that level, down from one in four in 1976.

In the second test, assessing mathematical thinking skills, just one in 20 pupils were achieving the high grades - down from one in five in 1976.

Professor Shayer said: ‘The pendulum test does not require any knowledge of science at all.

‘It looks at how people can deal with complex information and sort it out for themselves.’

He believes most of the downturn has occurred over the last ten to 15 years.

It may have been hastened by the introduction of national curriculum testing and accompanying targets, which have cut the time available for teaching which develops more advanced skills.

Critics say schools concentrate instead on drilling children for the tests.

‘The moment you introduce targets, people will find the most economical strategies to achieve them,’ said Professor Shayer.

‘In the case of education, I’m sure this has had an effect on driving schools away from developing higher levels of understanding.’

He added that while the numeracy hour in primary schools appears to have led to some gains, it has ’squeezed out a lot of things teachers might otherwise be doing’.

Professor Shayer believes the decline in brainpower is also linked to changes in children’s leisure activities.

The advent of multi-channel TV has encouraged passive viewing while computer games, particularly for boys, are feared to have supplanted time spent playing with tools, gadgets and other mechanisms.

Professor Shayer warned that without the development of higher-order thinking skills,
the future supply of scientists will be compromised.

‘We don’t even have enough scientists now,’ he said.

Previous research by Professor Shayer has shown that 11-year-olds’ grasp of concepts such as volume, density, quantity and weight appears to have declined over the last 30 years.

Their mental abilities were up to three years behind youngsters tested in in 1975.

His latest findings, due to appear in the British Journal of Educational Psychology, come in the wake of a report by Dr Aric Sigman which linked the decline in intellectual ability to a shift away from art and craft skills in both schools and the home.

Dr Sigman said practical activities such as building models and sandcastles, making dens, using tools, playing with building blocks, knitting, sewing and woodwork were being neglected.

Yet they helped develop vital skills such as understanding dimension, volume and density.

Earlier this month the Government bowed to mounting pressure and scrapped SATs for 14-year-olds.

Ministers have also created an independent exams watchdog and promised a return to traditional, open-ended questions at A-level plus a new A* grade to mark out the brightest students.

A spokesman for the Department for Children said last night: ‘Good teachers do not need to teach to the test and there is no evidence that such practice is widespread.

‘We have already taken steps to reduce the testing burden, but targets and testing are integral features of any work to drive up standards.’

Last month an Ofsted report said millions of teenagers were finishing compulsory education with a weak grasp of maths because half of the country’s schools fail to teach the subject as well as they could.

Inspectors said teachers were increasingly drilling pupils to pass exams instead of encouraging them to understand crucial concepts.

The report said: ‘It is of vital importance to shift from a narrow emphasis towards a focus on pupils’ mathematical understanding.’

Two white supremacists allegedly plotted to go on a national killing spree, shooting and decapitating black people and ultimately targeting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, federal authorities said Monday.

In all, the two men whom officials described as neo-Nazi skinheads planned to kill 88 people _ 14 by beheading, according to documents unsealed in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Tenn. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.

The spree, which initially targeted an unidentified predominantly African-American school, was to end with the two men driving toward Obama, “shooting at him from the windows,” the court documents show.

“Both individuals stated they would dress in all-white tuxedos and wear top hats during the assassination attempt,” the court complaint states. “Both individuals further stated they knew they would and were willing to die during this attempt.”

An Obama spokeswoman traveling with the senator in Pennsylvania had no immediate comment.

Sheriffs’ deputies in Crockett County, Tenn., arrested the two suspects _ Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tenn., and Paul Schlesselman 18, of Helena-West Helena, Ark. _ Oct. 22 on unspecified charges. “Once we arrested the defendants and suspected they had violated federal law, we immediately contacted federal authorities,” said Crockett County Sheriff Troy Klyce.

The two were charged by federal authorities Monday with possessing an unregistered firearm, conspiring to steal firearms from a federally licensed gun dealer, and threatening a candidate for president.

Cowart and Schlesselman are being held without bond. Agents seized a rifle, a sawed-off shotgun and three pistols from the men when they were arrested. Authorities alleged the two men were preparing to break into a gun shop to steal more.

Jasper Taylor, city attorney in Bells, said Cowart was arrested on Wednesday. He was held for a few days in Bells, then moved over the weekend to another facility.

“It was kept under lid until today,” Taylor said.

Until his arrest, Cowart lived with his grandparents in a southern, rural part of the county, Taylor said, adding that Cowart apparently never graduated from high school. He moved away, possibly to Arkansas or Texas, then returned over the summer, Taylor said.

Attorney Joe Byrd, who has been hired to represent Cowart, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday. Messages left on two phone numbers listed under Cowart’s name were not immediately returned.

No telephone number for Schlesselman in Helena-West Helena could be found immediately.

The court documents say the two men met about a month ago on the Internet and found common ground in their shared “white power” and “skinhead” philosophy.

The numbers 14 and 88 are symbols in skinhead culture, referring to a 14-word phrase attributed to an imprisoned white supremacist: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children” and to the eighth letter of the alphabet, H. Two “8″s or “H”s stand for “Heil Hitler.”

Court records say Cowart and Schlesselman also bought nylon rope and ski masks to use in a robbery or home invasion to fund their spree, during which they allegedly planned to go from state to state and kill people. Agents said the skinheads did not identify the African-American school they were targeting by name.

Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville, Tenn., field office for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, said authorities took the threats very seriously.

“They said that would be their last, final act _ that they would attempt to kill Sen. Obama,” Cavanaugh said. “They didn’t believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying.”

He added: “They seemed determined to do it. Even if they were just to try it, it would be a trail of tears around the South.”

An ATF affidavit filed in the case says Cowart and Schlesselman told investigators the day they were arrested they had shot at a glass window at Beech Grove Church of Christ, a congregation of about 60 black members in Brownsville, Tenn.

Nelson Bond, the church secretary and treasurer, said no one was at the church when the shot was fired. Members found the bullet had shattered the glass in the church’s front door when they arrived for evening Bible study.

“We have been on this site for about 120 years, and we have never had a problem like this before,” said Bond, 53 and a church member for 45 years.

The investigation is continuing, and more charges are possible, Cavanaugh said. He said there’s no evidence _ so far _ that others were willing to assist Cowart and Schlesselman with the plot.

At this point, there does not appear to be any formal assassination plan, Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren said.

“Whether or not they had the capability or the wherewithal to carry out an attack remains to be seen,” he said.

Zahren said the statements about the assassination came out in interviews after the men were arrested last week.

The Secret Service became involved in the investigation once it was clear that an Obama assassination attempt was part of this violent, far-reaching plot.

“We don’t discount anything,” Zahren said, adding that it’s one thing for the defendants to make statements, but it’s not the same as having an organized assassination plan.

Helena-West Helena, on the Mississippi River in east Arkansas’ Delta, is in one of the nation’s poorest regions, trailing even parts of Appalachia in its standard of living. Police Chief Fred Fielder said he had never heard of Schlesselman.

However, the reported threat of attacking a school filled with black students worried Fielder. Helena-West Helena, with a population of 12,200, is 66 percent black. “Predominantly black school, take your pick,” he said.

The brains of people who commit suicide are chemically different to those who die from other causes, a Canadian study has suggested.

Researchers analysed brain tissue from 20 dead people and, in those who killed themselves, they found a higher rate of a process that affects behaviour.

Writing in Biological Psychiatry, they said it appeared environmental factors played a part in the changes.

And they said the discovery opened up a new avenue of research.

The researchers, from the University of Western Ontario, Carleton University and University of Ottawa, analysed tissue from 10 people who had a serious depressive disorder and had committed suicide and 10 who had died suddenly from other causes, such as a heart attack.

They found that the DNA in the suicide group was being chemically modified by a process normally involved in regulating cell development, called methylation.

It is methylation which shuts down the unwanted genes in a cell - so the necessary genes are expressed to make a cell a skin cell rather than, for example, a heart cell.

The rate of methylation in the suicide brains was almost 10 times that of the other group, and the gene that was being shut down was a chemical message receptor that plays a major role in regulating behaviour.

In the paper, the researchers suggest this reprogramming could contribute to the “protracted and recurrent nature of major depressive disorder”.

Previous research has suggested that changes to the methylation process can be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors called epigenetics.

Modifications ’shape life’

Dr Michael Poulter, who led the research, said: “The whole idea that the genome is so malleable in the brain is surprising, because brain cells don’t divide.

“You get dealt your neurons at the start of life, so the idea that there are still epigenetic mechanisms going on is pretty unusual.”

He said the findings of the study opened up a new avenue of research and potential therapies for depression and suicidal tendencies.

John Krystal, the editor of Biological Psychiatry, said: “This is exciting new evidence that genetic and environmental factors may interact to produce specific and long-lasting modifications in brain circuits.

“Further, these modifications may shape the course of one’s life in extremely important ways, including increasing the risk for major depressive disorder and perhaps suicide.”Source:bbc.co.uk

Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens vowed to fight his Monday conviction on federal corruption charges, a verdict he attributed to “repeated instances of prosecutorial misconduct.”

“I will fight this unjust verdict with every ounce of energy I have,” the 84-year-old Stevens, the Senate’s longest-serving Republican, said in a written statement after the jury came back Monday afternoon. “I am innocent.”

Stevens was convicted of seven counts of making false statements on Senate ethics forms to hide hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts and work on his Alaska home from an oilfield contractor at the center of a corruption investigation in the state.

“This verdict is the result of the unconscionable manner in which the Justice Department lawyers conducted this trial,” he said.

The senator’s lawyers twice sought to have the charges thrown out during the month-long trial, accusing prosecutors of hiding evidence favorable to the defense. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan rejected those efforts, but blasted prosecutors for “hiding the ball.”

“I ask that Alaskans and my Senate colleagues stand with me as I pursue my rights,” Stevens said. He vowed to get the trial’s results overturned and added, “I remain a candidate for the United States Senate.”

The verdict came days before he is to face voters in a neck-and-neck re-election bid against his Democratic challenger, Mark Begich. Stevens hopes to retain the seat he has held since 1968.

A poll by Ivan Moore Research conducted October 17-19 found Begich slightly leading the race 46-45, within the poll’s margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.4 percentage points.

The longest-serving Republican senator in history, Stevens becomes the first senator to be convicted of a felony since 1981.

Stevens faces a maximum sentence of up to to 35 years in prison — five years for each of the seven counts

Legal experts note the judge has the discretion to give Stevens as little as no jail time and probation when he is sentenced.

He sat expressionless as the seven verdicts were read out at the end of his trial, less than a day after the jury began deliberations from scratch because of a change in jurors.

After the second guilty verdict was read, Stevens’ lead defense attorney, Brendan Sullivan, patted his back, leaving his hand there.

As Stevens left the defense area, he and his wife exchanged a kiss on the cheek. Stevens said: “It’s not over yet.” Stevens’ defense team said they will move for a new trial.

“This is a sad day for Alaska and a sad day for Sen. Stevens and his family,” Alaska Gov. and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin said after the verdict.

“The verdict shines a light on the corrupting influence of the big oil service company up there in Alaska that was allowed to control too much of our state. And that control was part of the culture of corruption that I was elected to fight, and that fight must always move forward regardless of party affiliation or seniority or even past service,” she said.

Stevens accepted “hundreds of thousands of dollars of freebies” from a major oil services company in his state, acting assistant Attorney General Matthew Friedrich said after the verdict.

“This company was not a charity,” he said, saying it solicited Stevens for help in Washington at the same time it was transforming Stevens’ single-story A-frame Alaska house into a two-story structure with a deck, new gas grill and other accouterments.

Judge Emmet Sullivan has scheduled a hearing on any pending motions for February 25.

The charges against Stevens related to renovations on his family home in Girdwood, Alaska. The remodeling was done by his longtime friend, Bill Allen, and Allen’s oil industry services company, VECO Corp.

The prosecution accused Stevens of knowingly failing to declare hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gifts and work on his house in Alaska between 1999 and 2006. Members of the Senate are required to fill out forms each year stating what gifts they have received and from whom.

Stevens’ defense said Allen, the senator’s friend, had quashed bills without the senator’s knowledge. Allen testified that he had done so because he “liked Ted.”

The defense said Stevens had paid the bills he received, thinking they covered the full cost of renovating the house in Girdwood, Alaska.

Allen, the government’s star witness, earlier pleaded guilty to trying to bribe a number of Alaska state lawmakers, not including Stevens. He is awaiting sentencing.

The jury began deliberations at noon Wednesday, but started anew Monday morning when an alternate replaced a juror who left town abruptly last week because of the death of her father.

The verdict comes after jurors spotted a discrepancy Monday between the government’s indictment and a key piece of evidence. The judge declined to throw out the related charge against Stevens

The indictment accuses Stevens of checking “No” in response to a question about whether Stevens or his family had “any reportable gift … more than $260″ in 2001. But the form introduced as evidence in court shows he checked “Yes.”

The jury sent out a note on the issue, prompting a debate between defense and prosecution attorneys about what instructions Sullivan should send the jury.

Prosecutors said the error was simply a “typo” on the indictment, and that other charges and evidence covered Steven’s alleged failure to disclose the home renovations at issue in the case.

Stevens’ defense said the judge should toss out the count that no longer matched the evidence.

The juror who left last week was Juror No. 4, a paralegal in her 40s. She told a U.S. marshal that she had to leave the state for a family emergency after the jury was dismissed Thursday.

Judge Sullivan dismissed the jury Friday morning after the woman left for California, hoping to resume with her on the panel as soon as possible.

Since then, court officials made several unsuccessful attempts to reach the woman. Defense attorneys for Stevens who was in court Sunday, had asked the judge to put off deliberations another day as they awaited the return of the juror, arguing against inserting an alternate in the middle of the process.

Last week, the judge dealt with another juror issue after the panel sent him a note Thursday accusing juror No. 9 of “violent outbursts” and other misconduct. They asked that she be dismissed, but Sullivan gave what he called a “pep talk” to the 12 and told them to resume their deliberations

An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.

The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman’s Club, police Lt. Lawrence Valliere said.

The boy, Christopher Bizilj of Ashford, Conn., was with a certified instructor and “was shooting the weapon down range when the force of the weapon made it travel up and back toward his head, where he suffered the injury,” a police statement said.

Christopher died at Baystate Medical Center.

Police said the boy’s father was at the gun fair and accompanied his son in the ambulance, but it wasn’t clear if he was at the firing range with Christopher at the time of the accident. Police didn’t give the father’s name.

Although police called it a “self-inflicted accidental shooting,” police and the Hampden district attorney’s office were investigating, officials said.

“We are going to review all the circumstance regarding what happened, who was involved, what authorities they may or may not have had, who was supervising,” District Attorney William Bennett said Monday.

It is legal for children to fire a weapon if they have permission from a parent or legal guardian and are supervised by a properly certified and licensed instructor, Lt. Hipolito Nunez said.

Those conditions were met in this case, he said. He declined to release the supervisor’s name.

The club said on its Web site that the event, run in conjunction with C.O.P Firearms and Training, is “all legal and fun.” People are allowed to fire weapons at vehicles, pumpkins and other targets, it said.

Officials of the private club and the firearms group could not be reached for comment. There was no response to a message left on a club answering machine. The C.O.P. group’s machine clicked off without taking a message.

The sportsman’s club was founded in 1949 and describes itself on its Web site as promoting “the interest of legal sport with rod, gun, and bow and arrow, both directly and through training.”

It has eight firing ranges as well as archery and fishing facilities located on 375 acres in Westfield, about 100 miles west of Boston.

Magic Johnson says he’s outraged that a pair of Minneapolis talk radio hosts accused him of faking AIDS.

KTLK’s Chris Baker and Langdon Perry made the remarks during Baker’s conservative talk show on Wednesday.

The context for the remarks wasn’t clear. According to a partial transcript and audio clip posted on a media watchdog site, mediamatters.org, the remarks came after a caller complained about demands on workers. Perry responded by asking about treatable diseases that a person can live with for a long time “if you just get some basic drugs.”

Baker responded, “Like Magic Johnson?”

Perry replied, “Like Magic with his faked AIDS. Magic faked AIDS.”

Baker said, “You think Magic faked AIDS for sympathy?”

Perry replied, “I’m convinced that Magic faked AIDS.”

“Me too,” Baker said.

Johnson issued a statement Thursday saying he was “outraged that Chris Baker and Langdon Perry would minimize such a serious and deadly issue.”

“Millions are dying from HIV/AIDS, and the fact that they would make jokes about my status is unbelievable,” Johnson said. “Chris, Langdon and KTLK should use their power in a more positive light by encouraging people to get tested for this disease instead of making up such ridiculous lies.”

Johnson was diagnosed with HIV in 1991 and retired from the NBA at 32.A KTLK program director didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.
